S’mores had been patiently waiting at a shelter in the San Francisco Bay Area, hoping for the day someone would choose him. That day finally came — his tail wagging with joy as he trotted out the door beside his new adopter. But the happiness was heartbreakingly short-lived. Just 30 minutes later, S’mores was returned with a shocking explanation: he was “too big.”
The shelter staff were stunned. S’mores hadn’t changed in size in the half-hour he was gone, and the reason felt almost surreal. Word of his return spread fast, reaching the ears of Sarah Meiches, cofounder and president of Mutt Luv Rescue.
“We couldn’t believe it,” Meiches told The Dodo. “It was honestly one of the most ridiculous reasons we’ve heard for returning a dog. S’mores didn’t magically grow in half an hour — he just wasn’t given a fair chance.”
The rejection hit S’mores hard. His body language said it all as he sulked back into his kennel, his spirit clearly dimmed. But the rescue community refused to let that be the end of his story.
Within hours, a compassionate foster stepped forward, eager to give S’mores the home he so desperately needed.
“Once we had a foster lined up, we jumped into action,” Meiches said. “With the help of Not Your Average Rescue, we arranged transport and got him safely into a loving foster home. It was a beautiful example of what we can do when we all work together.”
Free from the noisy shelter and surrounded by kindness, S’mores began to blossom. It quickly became clear that this sweet pup had likely never lived indoors before. But with a bit of patience and plenty of love, he adapted fast — and turned out to be a perfect housemate.
“S’mores is smart, goofy, affectionate and full of life,” Meiches said. “He’s thriving in his foster home — going on hikes, learning new tricks, and soaking up every bit of love he can get. He wants to be involved in everything, whether you're brushing your teeth or binging TV shows. He’s your shadow, your sidekick, your couch snuggle buddy.”
His foster family can’t quite wrap their heads around why anyone would return a dog like him. Yes, he’s big. Yes, he’s enthusiastic. But above all, he’s deeply loving and ready to give his whole heart to the right family.
“With just a little guidance, he’s going to be the perfect companion,” Meiches said. “He just needs someone willing to see past first impressions and recognize the incredible dog he truly is.”
